In the inaugural Food for Thought report of 2025, Lubbock's dining establishments have faced a thorough inspection, revealing a spectrum of performance from top-rated eateries to those with significant health and safety violations. Notably, Kaveri Indian Cuisine, La Palapa Mexican Restaurant, and Pecan Grill at Overton Hotel & Conference Center were cited for multiple critical infractions, ranging from improper food storage to unsanitary practices. Meanwhile, several local favorites emerged as top performers, showcasing exemplary standards in food safety and hygiene.
Kaveri Indian Cuisine, located on 50th Street, was flagged for an alarming 28 violations during its recent inspection. Among the issues identified were improperly maintained temperatures for buffet items, cross-contamination risks due to raw eggs being stored above ready-to-eat foods, and a lack of proper handwashing procedures by staff. The restaurant also faced concerns over the potential for botulism due to dented canned goods. Management failed to demonstrate adequate knowledge of food safety protocols, leading to these extensive findings.
The problems extended beyond just temperature control. Clean dishes were improperly stacked, preventing effective air drying, while utensils and kitchen tools showed signs of wear and tear that could compromise hygiene. Additionally, toxic substances were found stored above food items, posing further risks. Despite these numerous violations, many of the issues were addressed on-site during the inspection.
La Palapa Mexican Restaurant, situated on Slide Road, also encountered a concerning 29 violations. Issues included cooked rice exceeding safe temperature limits, incorrect storage of raw meats over fish, and employees not adhering to proper hand hygiene before handling food. The absence of soap at handwashing stations and damaged kitchen equipment like chipped bowls and melted lids added to the list of concerns. Moreover, personal items such as water bottles were found in inappropriate locations within food prep areas. Again, most violations were corrected promptly during the inspection.
Pecan Grill, part of the Overton Hotel & Conference Center, fared no better with 30 violations noted. Key issues involved inadequate refrigeration for breakfast buffet items, outdated or improperly labeled food products, and the misuse of cleaning chemicals. Several items, including ham and strawberries, were either past their use-by dates or showing signs of spoilage. Kitchen cleanliness was also called into question, with baking pans covered in grease and utensils improperly stored. Like the others, many violations were rectified immediately.
On a positive note, some establishments stood out for their adherence to strict food safety standards. Giorgio’s Pizza, Keva Juice, Pushin Nutrition, Starbucks, and Dunkin’ all earned commendable ratings, reflecting their commitment to maintaining high levels of cleanliness and food safety. These restaurants serve as models for others in the community, demonstrating that vigilance and attention to detail can ensure a safe dining experience for customers.
