Hello! I am Payton Caldwell, the new sports reporter for the Times West Virginian. At just 24 years old, this opportunity is a dream come true for a former athlete and avid sports fan. Just like Michael Jordan said, "Some people want it to happen, some wish it would happen, and others make it happen." I dedicated my life to the sports world and fell in love with sports writing at a young age, and now I'm here.Roots and Early Influences
I am from Huntington, West Virginia, and grew up in Kenova. During the era of Ceredo-Kenova High School, legends were made. From a young age, the pen and the basketball were my constant companions. Whether it was learning basic fundamentals in Buddy League or spending hours in the gym as I grew older, the game and I became inseparable. Any basketball gym was like a second home for me. In contrast, while my peers dreaded essays and research papers, I thrived on the opportunity to express myself through words.
Family Legacy
My parents are both Marshall University graduates and collegiate athletes, one in cheerleading and the other in basketball. I decided to follow in their footsteps and become part of the Marshall legacy. Growing up, I spent many Saturdays in Joan C. Edwards Stadium, watching the Herd battle their opponents. The echo of "We Are Marshall" in the stadium is one of the most magical sounds in college football. Being part of this rich history has been a rewarding experience.
Academic Pursuits
After graduating summa cum laude with degrees in history and English, I pursued a Master of Arts in English at the College of Charleston in Charleston, South Carolina. Moving away from home for the first time was challenging, but living in this historic city and attending a university founded in 1770 allowed me to continue my passion for writing and connect my love of sports to various projects.
Hobbies and Interests
When I'm not writing for the Times, you can often find me in front of the TV watching Duke basketball games (sorry to UK fans, my all-time favorite college basketball player is Christian Laettner), Notre Dame football, or unfortunately, Cleveland Browns games on Sundays. I also enjoy taking walks with my West Highland Terrier, Winston, reading, and spending time with my two younger siblings.
