Washington officials are currently dealing with the aftermath of a fire that ravaged a Northern Virginia recreation center. Linda Bradshaw, the general manager, was inside with her son when the blaze broke out. She vividly recalled opening the door and seeing the entire back wall engulfed in flames, leaving her shocked at how a metal wall could catch fire. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, with the fire marshal's office indicating that it started outside a single-family home on Devil's Reach Road, which is just a few yards away from the recreation center on Sport and Health Drive. The fire spread to the center due to the ignition of brush and other combustibles.Impact on the Single Family Home and Residents
Three people were displaced from the single-family home where the fire began. The Red Cross is providing assistance to them during this difficult time. The fire was ultimately classified as a third-alarm fire, highlighting its severity.
Effects on the Recreation Center
The Kid's Choice Sports Center typically sees around 100 people each day. However, with the fire, all activities have been put on hold as they search for temporary options. Bradshaw shared that it was a restless night as she pondered what to do next. This center has been her life's work, focused on keeping kids active. She expressed hope that they can rebuild the facility and have found another space that they can open temporarily.
Insurance and the Future
Currently, the center's owners are working through insurance to determine the fate of the building. Bradshaw remains hopeful that a solution will be found in due time. In Prince William County, there is currently no other similar place for kids or adults to go. People stay active here until 12 at night, playing soccer and having fun. It is an important community asset that everyone values.
