Combating the Summer Slide
The Deer Creek Summer Program recognizes the critical importance of maintaining academic momentum during the summer months. As Romy Anderson, the Public Housing Manager for Topeka Housing Association, explains, "You lose a lot in the summer. Everybody remembers when they go back to school and they try to write something, they have to think a second. So we like to keep that up in between school with our program."By incorporating the Read and Ride initiative, the program encourages children to engage in reading activities while exploring their local community. "Reading is the fundamental beginning of anything academic," Anderson emphasizes. "So, we push that on them all the time, that when you can read well, that is the start of a great academic beginning."
Fostering a Love for Learning
The Deer Creek Summer Program goes beyond traditional summer activities, aiming to cultivate a lifelong love for learning. Through field trips to the zoo, visits to the library, and the distribution of free books, the program ensures that children have access to a diverse range of educational resources."We've done this reading program all throughout the year," Anderson reveals. "We've gone to the zoo, we go to the library, all the kids get library cards. They get free books at different times of the year. It's just to promote reading."
Collaborative Efforts for Community Impact
The success of the Deer Creek Summer Program is the result of a collaborative effort between the United Way of Kaw Valley, the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library, and the Topeka Housing Authority. By working together, these organizations have created a comprehensive initiative that not only supports the academic growth of local children but also strengthens the community as a whole.
Inspiring the Next Generation of Lifelong Learners
The Deer Creek Summer Program's commitment to reading and community engagement is a testament to the power of education and the transformative impact it can have on young lives. By fostering a love for learning and providing access to valuable resources, the program is empowering children to become the next generation of lifelong learners, equipped with the skills and knowledge to succeed in their academic and personal pursuits. As the summer comes to a close, the Deer Creek Summer Program and the Book Rich Environment initiative continue to leave a lasting impression on the children they serve, inspiring them to embrace the joy of reading and the boundless possibilities that come with a thirst for knowledge.
