Employees at these businesses are working diligently to ensure vehicles remain in optimal condition during the colder months. One Gulfport car wash reported that within just four hours, they serviced 200 cars, primarily due to customers seeking to remove salt residue from their vehicles. This proactive approach helps prevent rust formation on car undercarriages. Meanwhile, auto service centers emphasize the importance of checking vital components such as tires, coolant, and oil to ensure safe driving in winter conditions.
At Rich’s Car Wash in Gulfport, General Manager Chuck Dowe highlighted the importance of maintaining vehicles through regular cleaning. “Just like any piece of equipment, vehicles need maintenance to avoid future issues,” he explained. The facility uses water, pipes, and hydraulics—components that can be vulnerable to cold temperatures. To mitigate potential damage, Dowe ensures that heaters are placed in the tunnel overnight to prevent freezing of water lines and chemical systems. “We take extra precautions to protect our equipment from freezing, which could disrupt operations,” he added.
The recent snowfall forced the car wash to close for two days, underscoring the necessity of keeping all machinery in working order. Special attention is given to the side wraps, materials used to clean the sides and back of vehicles. These materials must be kept free of ice to function properly and safely. Dowe emphasized the importance of safeguarding these components to ensure smooth operation when business resumes.
Kevin Poulos, Service Manager at David Poulos Tire and Auto, pointed out that while the amount of salt on the roads is not concerning, vehicle owners should focus on using the correct type of antifreeze. “Each vehicle has specific antifreeze requirements, and using the wrong one can cause significant problems,” Poulos warned. He also advised drivers to check tire pressure, coolant levels, and oil temperature regularly during cold weather. Running the engine for five minutes before driving can help warm up the vehicle and improve performance.
To prepare for winter driving, the Mississippi Department of Transportation recommends several preventive measures. These include checking the car battery and charging system, flushing and refilling the cooling system with new antifreeze, inspecting brakes, ensuring the heater and defroster work properly, verifying windshield wipers are functional, checking tire pressure weekly, confirming interior lights and headlights are functioning correctly, changing oil and filters as recommended, and ensuring there are no exhaust system leaks to prevent carbon monoxide buildup.
